Tips for Pool Plant Operation and Design

Pool Hall Temperature:
Text books refer to a space temperature at least 2 degrees higher than the pool water temperature. From observation, we have found that this is far too high and leads to thermal discomfort and increased space heating load. Ideally, a space temperature of 24-25 degrees is a good compromise for both bather and lifegurad.

Humidity:
If your plant air ventilation system is speed controlled or if the fresh air mixing ration is variable and set by humidty sensing, then a humidity set point of 75% is acceptable. It may sound high but this level of relative humidity is on the boundary line for lifeguard comfort, reduces water evaporation and pool air ventilation running costs.

Pool Water Temperature:
For competition pools, 26 degrees is comfortable. Leisure pools should not be heated above 28 degrees for economy or 29 degrees if pressured by the public. Children's pools should be set to 31-32 degrees.

More Tips:
If you are involved in the construction of a new pool, consider installing thermally broken window joinery. This means that the outer aluminum frame is connected to the internal frame using an insulating material such as rubber. The net effect is far reduced "sweating" on the inside joinery surface.
